Why I Keep a Portable Jump Starter in Every Vehicle

I own both the TACKLIFE T8 Pro and NOCO GB20. I rarely need them, but that's exactly why I want a portable jump starter available in every vehicle. Here's what I learned about owning these two emergency power packs.

There are some things I keep in a vehicle hoping I never have to use them.

A portable jump starter is one of them.

I own both a TACKLIFE T8 Pro and a NOCO Boost Sport GB20. I don't use either one very often, and I'm not going to pretend I've spent hundreds of hours testing them against each other.

But I do know why I want one available.

A dead car battery can turn a normal day into a major inconvenience. If you're parked at home, it may be easy to find another vehicle and a set of jumper cables. If you're sitting in a parking lot, on the side of the road, or somewhere without anyone around, the situation is different.

That's why my goal is simple:

Have a portable jump starter available in every vehicle.

What Is a Portable Jump Starter?

A portable jump starter is essentially a rechargeable battery pack designed to provide the high current needed to help start a vehicle with a weak or discharged 12-volt battery.

Unlike traditional jumper cables, you don't need another vehicle sitting next to you.

That's the part I like.

The jump starter stays in your vehicle until you actually need it.

Modern units can also do more than provide emergency starting power. Depending on the model, they can charge phones and other USB devices, provide emergency lighting, and supply power for certain accessories.

That makes them more useful than something that only comes out when the car won't start.

I Own Both: TACKLIFE T8 Pro and NOCO GB20

The two units I have are quite different on paper.

The TACKLIFE T8 Pro is rated at 1,200 amps peak and has an 18,000mAh battery rated at 66.6Wh. Its published specifications include 5V/9V Quick Charge, 5V/2.1A USB output, a 12V/10A output, IP65 protection, an LCD display and a 4.5-hour full charging time. The documentation also lists 500A starting current for three seconds and 300A for five seconds.

The NOCO GB20 is rated at 500A peak and has a 24Wh lithium-ion battery. NOCO specifies it for 12V lead-acid batteries and gasoline engines up to 4.0 liters, while diesel use is not recommended. It also has USB output, a 100-lumen flashlight, IP65 protection and a one-year warranty.

So yes, the numbers look very different.

But here's where I think people can get confused.

Don't Judge a Jump Starter Only by the Biggest Number

Seeing 1,200A versus 500A makes it tempting to declare the TACKLIFE the winner.

I wouldn't do that.

Those peak-current figures are manufacturer specifications, but they don't tell the entire story about how two jump starters will perform in every situation. The TACKLIFE documentation, for example, separately lists 1,200A peak current and lower specified starting-current figures for timed intervals.

NOCO, meanwhile, clearly states the GB20's intended application: 12V lead-acid batteries and gasoline engines up to 4.0L.

That's why I would rather compare the whole package than simply circle the largest number printed on the box.

TACKLIFE T8 Pro: What the Specifications Tell Us

The T8 Pro has a fairly large 66.6Wh battery for a portable jump starter and offers several power-related features.

According to its available documentation, it includes:

  • 1,200A peak current

  • 18,000mAh / 66.6Wh battery

  • 500A starting current for 3 seconds

  • 300A starting current for 5 seconds

  • 5V/9V Quick Charge

  • 5V/2.1A output

  • 12V/10A output

  • LCD battery display

  • IP65 protection

  • Built-in emergency lighting

  • Approximately 4.5 hours charging time

The manufacturer/distributor specifications also describe the T8 Pro as suitable for larger gasoline and diesel engines, but because current primary manufacturer support for this older model is difficult to verify, I would treat those engine-size claims as manufacturer claims rather than independently established performance limits.

That distinction matters.

NOCO GB20: A Different Approach

The GB20 has a lower published peak-current number, but NOCO provides very clear specifications for what the unit is designed to handle.

NOCO lists:

  • 500A peak current

  • 24Wh lithium-ion battery

  • 12V lead-acid battery compatibility

  • Gas engines up to 4.0L

  • Diesel engines not recommended

  • 5V/2.1A USB output

  • 100-lumen flashlight

  • IP65 protection

  • 2.1 lb listed on the current specifications page

  • One-year limited warranty

NOCO also provides current support material explaining how to use the GB20, including charging USB devices and using its manual-override function for batteries below 2 volts.

That's a significant advantage for someone who wants clearly documented product support.

So Which One Is Better?

I don't think I can honestly tell you that one is universally better.

And that's not a cop-out.

The TACKLIFE T8 Pro has impressive published capacity and power specifications. The NOCO GB20 has clearly documented vehicle compatibility, safety features, current support and a straightforward design.

If you're comparing specifications, there are obvious differences.

If you're asking me the more practical question—

“Should I have one in my vehicle?”

My answer is yes, assuming the model is appropriate for your vehicle and you follow its instructions.

That's the part that matters most to me.

A Jump Starter Is More Than a Backup for a Dead Battery

This is another reason I like having one available.

The jump-starting function may be the main reason you buy it, but it's not necessarily the only thing you'll use.

Charge your phone

Both the T8 Pro and GB20 provide USB power for compatible devices. NOCO specifically documents using the GB20 to charge phones and other USB devices.

That could be useful if you're dealing with a roadside problem and your phone battery is running low.

Emergency lighting

Both products have built-in lighting.

The GB20 includes a 100-lumen LED flashlight, while the T8 Pro includes emergency lighting functions according to its documentation.

A flashlight isn't exciting until you're trying to connect battery clamps in the dark.

Then it becomes pretty important.

Portable power

The T8 Pro also has a 12V/10A output in addition to its USB outputs, giving it more flexibility for compatible accessories.

That doesn't mean you should plug just anything into it. Check the voltage, current and connector requirements of the accessory first.

The Most Important Part: Keep It Ready

Here's the catch.

A jump starter is only useful if the jump starter itself has enough charge.

That's easy to forget because you may go months without touching it.

The T8 Pro documentation specifies a 4.5-hour full charging time, while NOCO provides charge-status information and charging instructions for the GB20.

I wouldn't wait until the car battery dies to find out that the portable battery pack has been sitting there nearly empty.

My approach would be simple:

Check the charge periodically and maintain it according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Also inspect the unit periodically for physical damage. Lithium-ion batteries can become hazardous if damaged, overheated or otherwise abused; the FAA notes that lithium-ion batteries can undergo thermal runaway under certain conditions, including damage and overheating.

If a jump starter is swollen, damaged, unusually hot or otherwise behaving abnormally, don't treat it like a normal piece of equipment.

What About Hybrids and Electric Vehicles?

This is where you need to slow down.

A portable jump starter is not automatically appropriate for every vehicle.

NHTSA explains that the high-voltage battery in an electric or hybrid vehicle is not something you simply jump like a conventional car battery. In many cases, the 12-volt system can still require a jump, but the vehicle manufacturer's instructions should be followed.

So before using a jump starter:

Read your vehicle owner's manual.

Don't assume that because a jump starter worked on one vehicle, it's appropriate for another.

The same applies to engine size, battery type, connection points and special procedures.

Why I Want One in Every Vehicle

This is really what brought me to the idea in the first place.

I don't need to use a jump starter every week.

I don't even want to use one very often.

That's not the point.

It's an emergency tool.

You keep a flashlight because you might need it.

You keep a spare tire because you might get a flat.

You keep basic tools because something might break.

A portable jump starter belongs in the same category for me.

Hopefully, it spends most of its life sitting there doing absolutely nothing.

And if the day comes when the battery is dead and the engine won't start, I'll be very happy that it was there.

TACKLIFE or NOCO?

If you're specifically comparing the two products I own, here's how I'd summarize them:

TACKLIFE T8 Pro

Best suited to someone attracted to:

  • Larger published battery capacity

  • Higher advertised peak-current rating

  • Multiple power outputs

  • LCD battery display

  • Additional emergency functions

NOCO GB20

Appeals to someone looking for:

  • A clearly defined 12V jump-start application

  • Up to 4.0L gasoline-engine compatibility

  • USB charging

  • Built-in flashlight

  • IP65 protection

  • Current manufacturer documentation and support

My personal conclusion?

I own both.

I don't have enough firsthand testing to declare one the universal winner.

And frankly, that's not what matters most to me.

I'd rather have a properly maintained jump starter in the vehicle than sit somewhere with a dead battery wishing I had bought one.

Final Thoughts

The best emergency tool is often the one you actually have with you.

That's why my goal is to eventually have a portable jump starter in every vehicle we own.

It doesn't have to be the most expensive model.

It doesn't have to have the biggest number on the package.

It just needs to be an appropriate unit for the vehicle, maintained properly, kept ready, and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
